This is my debut and it was recorded around the time of my wedding to Heidi. It is a soundtrack to our real life romance. I hope these songs bless your ears and encourages you to follow your heart despite the circumstances.

about

Paper Memory Oslo, Norway

Paper Memory started off as a confessional to music for Australian songwriter Derek Goodreid and then matured into more of a romantic melodic folk storytelling paired with his Norwegian wife Heidi Jørgensen Goodreid. As the lyrics evolved so has the music, moving from an acoustic punk feel to more folk alt country leanings reminiscent of Bon Iver and the Swell Season. ... more

Track Name: Take A Fall
Can you be a stone and let the storm pass over you.
Can you be alone with the scent of her perfume?
Don’t you know? Love may come and love may even go,
but love can't catch you unless you take a fall.
So take a fall.
Can you be a leaf and float above these needy streets.
Can you be so free when you're a book left on the shelf.
Take a fall.
Track Name: How It Is?
How can this be?
I’ve found my true love
across the sea and out of reach.
Is that how it is ?
Is that all you know?
It’s time to get up, get up and go.
How can this be?
I’ve found my voice
after years of silence
locked in a cage.
Is that how it?
Is that all you know?
It’s time to get up, get up and go.
How can this be?
I’ve found my faith
at the end of a rope
it’s hard to breath.
Track Name: The Difference
Oh my love what a difference
one word from you can make.
It can build me up
or tear me down so fast.
Oh my love what a difference
one day with you could make.
It could save my soul
or make me lose all control.
You and me and the Holy Ghost,
the ties that bind us close.
Oh my love are you hearing this?
These words I speak are true
but if actions speak louder
then let my words be few.
You and me and the Holy Ghost,
the ties that bind us closer and closer.
You are the difference.
Track Name: From Freo to Oslo
When I feel the wind hit the sails, I wonder if it's your breath.
When I hear the roar of the ocean, I wonder if it's your voice.
Calling me, calling me.
I'm so far from home, but I know I'm not alone.
When I see the light of the North Star, I wonder if it's you with a candle searching for me in the darkness,
and calling out my name.
Calling me, calling me.
I'm so far from home, but I know I'm not alone.
Just trying to make my way, from Freo to Oslo.
The rise and fall of the waves,
sailors and lovers there's no early graves tonight.
From Freo to Oslo
Track Name: Man Overboard
Breaking, breaking like the waves upon the shore.
Breaking, breaking like timber against the rocks,
and where is the lighthouse to guide my way back home.
Shaking, shaking like the mast caught in the storm.
Shaking, shaking like a man about to die,
and where are the angels to guide my way back home.
Man over, man overboard.
Track Name: Fear Not
I recall our conversations about nothing at all.
I remember when two of our loved ones died,
within the year we lost that fire.
Fear not I won't forsake you,
fear not I won't forsake you,
even though those demons take you away.
I reveal all of my secrets.
when you come close my arms hold you so tight.
Fear not I won't forsake you,
fear not I won't forsake you,
even though those demons take you away.
No those demons can't take you away.
Track Name: Wrong, Wrong, Wrong
I always thought love was solid
like cement, like cement.
But sometimes it just falls apart
and it all goes wrong.
It all goes wrong.
it all goes wrong, wrong, wrong.
I always thought true love is made up
it’s like pretend, it’s like pretend.
So I never thought I would love again,
but I was wrong.
yes I was wrong.
I was wrong, wrong, so, so wrong.
And love you let your light shine
down on my darkest,
darkest of days.
Track Name: By Your Side
When you’re searching, when your searching,
you will find I was always near.
When you’re asking, you’re always asking,
I will give more than you need.
And when you knock, the door will be opened for you.
When you’re hurting, when your hurting,
I will fix more than your fix.
When you’re lonely, so low and lonely
I'll be so close to thee.
Just reach up your hands
I'll pick you up again.
I'll be your warmth, I'll be your light,
I'll be the one to set things,
I'll always be by your side.
By your side, alright.
Track Name: Through Old Iron Trees
Through old iron trees you whisper to me
all of the secrets that I’ll ever need.
Beneath these light bulb stars
we forget who we are,
lost within a concrete maze.
So close but yet so far
like ghosts we just don't touch
and rush to get to our old haunts.
We're always searching,
searching for each other.
The curtains begin to descend like autumn leaves
from tree limbs and hopefully you're still entwined in mine.
On our favourite park bench old, wise and bent and
happy we finally found each other.
Track Name: It Takes A Thief
Your love, your love is a bird
trapped in a rusty cage.
Where you sing your songs
to no one, no one who cares enough
to set you free.
Your heart, your heart is on display
for all the world to see.
Locked up behind a glass case
silent alarms and security.
And I want to steal you away,
away from here.
But I want to steal you away,
away from here.
You can't do it on your own.
No you can't do it on your own.
Sometimes it just takes a thief,
a thief like me.
